Sketching Your World: Exploring Composition and a Dramatic Sense of Depth

Using techniques learned in class, you’ll build a complete line and watercolor wash sketch of a lively waterfront tiki bar scene, step-by-step, while following me on the video and using reference photos that I’ll provide. We’ll work together, setting up a dynamic composition and employing a range of techniques to create a believable sense of depth. Remember to relax, work step-by-step, and enjoy the process—this is a judgement-free zone.
Gather your materials as described in lesson two and in the handout under the Projects and Resources tab. As you work through the project, you’ll be applying a number of techniques you’ve learned:

Composition and editing
Foreground, middle ground, background
Diminishing size and detail
Overlapping, line weight
Atmospheric depth
Ink line and watercolor wash techniques for on-location sketching
