Escape Into Plein Air – One man's journey, painting in each of America's National Parks
When Robert Rigsby reached sixty years of age, he looked back and felt he had little to show for nine years of college education and over thirty years in veterinary practice. His greatest surgical repairs and medical cases now, at best, in a pet cemetery and more likely buried in someone’s back yard, forgotten. He saw much greater value in the product of his other life’s passion, painting. That effort produced works that could endure and be appreciated for hundreds of years, that he could point to and say, “I did that.” Works that could be adored for generations to come. His resolve, to employ the remaining productive years of his life in art.
Having had some success selling his Plein Air paintings, Robert will immerse himself in that genre. After suggestions from beer drinking friends, he selects the National Parks as his subject matter. He departs with the intention to paint, on site with no photo references, in “all the National Parks.”
Not financially secure enough for this endeavor, he, without regard for his future, pulls out funds from a small and insufficient retirement account. He then purchases the most economical means of transportation he can find, a small commercial van. Next, he gathers up paints, easel, tent, sleeping bag, and with blind resolve to produce great works of art, hits the road. Friends and family, for the most part, seriously and appropriately, questioning his sanity…
He also has an impassioned and to this point, unexpressed, desire to find of his muse. That woman who will engage, support and inspire his greatest works.
The journey will take him thirty-thousand miles. He will be challenged by many long miles, mosquito swarms, dashboard fire, ruptured tires, moose, bear, snow, searing heat, pot holes, border police and ladies of the night…
His wing-man (wheel-man?) and sounding board, VanGo. Yes, the little van is his closest friend.
In each park, he sets up the easel and paints. Inspired by the works of the Impressionists, he paints. In wind, snow and rain, he paints. From the peaks of Denali and Rainier to the swamps of the Everglades and depths of Death Valley, he paints. The greatest works of art have a story. Here’s Robert’s story…
Written and lavishly illustrated with photos and paintings…
